Malaga, the capital of the Costa del Sol, formed by the Phoenicians and occupied by the Greeks, Romans, Carthaginian and Muslims was reconquered in 1487 by the Catholic Monarchs.
Many monuments from this time are still in existence. The cathedral, the Alcazaba (a castle of the Moors), the fortress of Gibralfaro and the roman theater are witnesses of this long lasting and prosperous era. Malaga's most famous son, Pablo Picasso, was actually born in Malaga in 1881. Some of his finest art works can be visited in the Picasso Museum.
